We just cleared a week into the New Year and for me, it’s been a very long week. For one, I’m a part of this furlough that’s plaguing the Government. Secondly, my family unit and I are also coming to realize the importance of family support during a time of grief.
What I took from last year that’s been ringing in my head all week is how fragile life is for all of us. We never know what’s going to happen and/or when, and we have to love on each other and try to live at peace while we’re here. Another thing that’s been on my mind is the importance of not giving your first job your everything. I’m not saying don’t go to work and do a good job, but this is definitely a great time to understand your passion and develop that into a side-hustle. Even if you’re not a part of the furlough! Realize your talent and decide what you can do with it outside of your 9-5. After many years of being a beyond broke single mother, living in the basement with mold and mice, I’m blessed to now have a savings account and am no longer living check to check. But it took years! Not long ago this furlough would’ve put me in a very bad position, like it’s doing for so many across America. And I could still be doing more to provide a hedge around my family.
The beginning of the year is also a good time to assess your wardrobe. What should leave and what should stay? Is there any way to save a few coins by re-purposing a look? That’s what I did with this strapless sequins Betsey Johnson dress that I got from a consignment store a few years ago. I wore a white button-down shirt under this fit-and-flare dress and tied a ribbon around the shirt’s collar. Now I can wear this dress more than one way! I have other ideas for this dress as well so it won’t go “out with the old” this New Year.
While this New Year may not be coming in exactly as planned, we are always be blessed to see another year. As we close out the first week of 2019 I pray most for my family, that their hearts are healed and comforted. I can also be thankful that I’ll be okay with whatever the Prez decides to do about this “wall” and my paycheck. These few days have altered my perspective of 2019, and has humbled my focus, just that quick! Life will always have the final say.
What’s been on your mind or happening during this very New Year? Has anything changed from January 1 to now? Leave a comment below!
XOXO, Yana B.
