The past year and a half put a cap on many big travel ideas. How many people planned a Disney trip, or was it just my family? Instead, we learned how to make the most of life, and each other. We played games, watched movies, and had lots of real conversations. Now that we’re coming out of the pandemic, we still aren’t Disney ready, but we are vacation ready. But even that is a slow walk. So we came up with the next best idea, a staycation!

Our first venture to start of the summer was at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, DC. First, the hotel is amazing, second it’s filled with so much history, and third, it’s a great place to visit with a teen and a tot! Both Anaya and Lee had a blast, and I even got to spend a little time alone for a spa treatment.

As a mom of a teen and a toddler, any activity we do must peak both of their interests, and this hotel is a win! Anaya loved the rich musical and “fancy” aspect of the hotel as well as the surrounding area of Northwest DC. The Omni sits on 11 acres, 4.5 which are manicured lawns perfect to picnic, play, and enjoy the gorgeous gardens but it’s also a few steps away from both the National Zoo, and DuPont Circle. She loves to read so we took a walk down to Kramers bookstore in Dupont which has a restaurant attached to it. She was in heaven. Not to be left out, Lee enjoyed the walk too but not before spending all day at the pool where he got first class service from the pool bar.
As a mom, a staycation is a wonderful idea. Here are my top reasons why:
- You don’t have to pack as much. Or, you can pack as much as you want! Typically staycations are a drive, bus, or train ride away so you don’t have to worry about carry on luggage through an airport!
- Staycations are less stressful, and not a far commute. Therefore you can spend more time together at your destination than traveling.
- You can learn so much about your city when you stay at a nearby location; at home away from home. Be a tourist for a weekend and have the freedom to tour your own city.
Pick a hotel that has something for everyone! For my toddler, having a pool is necessary. For my daughter, room service and being close to amenities is important. For me, the price and convenience is a must, and seeing happy kids is an extra treat. Of course good food, local surroundings, and a hotel that has a friendly staff that welcomes children and teens is perfect!
As the summer isn’t out yet, we look forward to more stays, more plays, and more ‘cations! Where are you and your family going this summer?
XOXO,
