Over the knee boots have been in style for at least the past three fall seasons. How do I know? Because I purchased my Steve Madden’s around that time. At first I looked at the trend and thought, would I look like a street-walker or stripper in boots that climbed all the way up my leg and ended mid-thigh? But just like everything else, there has to be balance. Balanced style makes fashion. And fashion is the goal, right? Here are some tips to balance the over-the-knee boot trend:
Heeled/Platform Over-the-Knee Boot
The heeled boot, especially when it has a platform, should be blended into the outfit. This means that it compliments the outfit without screaming “Look at me!” Therefore, the outfit itself needs to have substance; add a pattern and/or a solid color. Make sure the hem is the correct length if you’re wearing a dress; a mid-thigh hem (as opposed to a booty cutting hem) is best. A sheath silhouette is ideal for this type of boot (as opposed to a body-hugging fabric). Wear minimal accessories because the boot is the accessory and it will draw enough attention to your outfit without you having to do much else.

Flat Sole Over-the-Knee Boot
We were so happy when the flat sole riding boot over-the-knee came on the scene. For those of us into street style, it was an exciting time in a shoe lovers life. This boot composes two wonderful themes; the sexiness of over the knee and the ruggedness of equestrian turned street style without the fussiness of a heel. Translation? You can wear this boot all day, and all night. Therefore it’s even more important to make sure that your outfit can transform. Once again, minimal is key because anything that takes up more than half of your leg is going to bring attention. What’s the best case scenario to accomplish this? Add a patterned denim/pant paired with a solid color top. Or.. solid denim with a patterned top. Of course you can always go monotone as well. Let the boot do the talking while you do the walking!

I paired this look with a black over-sized sweater, patterned jeans, and Steven OTK boots
How do the Celebs wear them?

Lily Collins paired her black OTK’s with a mini and a color-blocked over-sized sheer top
Mena Suvari paired her OTK’s with denim, basic tee and a long coat, classy!
Nicole Scherzinger paired hers with a cute white hi-lo shift dress, nicely balanced
Scarlett Johansson went elegant/sultry with her Balmain OTK’s in Vanity Fair France

Then Meagan Good paired them with shorts and tights…
