When thinking of fashion, law is not something that readily comes to mind….but there are many cases where they go hand in hand. When emerging into the business of fashion, there are issues that can arise – or issues that can be avoided, if you are familiar with the law. To highlight the relationship between fashion and law, Candace Key founded Fashion Law Week DC in 2011 as a way for lawyers to come together and learn about fashion law through panels, special events, and of course…fashion.
Style Stamped had the opportunity to attend the “Intelligent Design Runway Show” during Fashion Law Week DC 2014 entitled “Fashion Tech: The Law of Fashion in a Digital Marketplace.” The show was held at the upscale Toolbox Pilates and Fine Art Studio on Connecticut Ave NW in Washington, DC. The setting was perfect for a fashion show! The colorful modern art paintings of Kiril Jeliazkov adorned the walls, and Mr. Jeliazkov and his partners were also in attendance during the event. The beautiful Joy Kingsley-Ibeh was the show’s host for the six fashion designers and models from Models, INC graced the runway.
SJosiah
Liberian born Sonia Josaih of SJosiah was the first designer featured. We loved the diversity of SJosiah’s collection; the silhouettes were modern and the inclusion of African prints were well balanced. This collection took us from sporty to sexy, with an outfit fit for almost any occasion.
Tru-Vision Clothing
Liberian born Joseph T. Mayah II featured t-shirt designs from his company Tru-Vision Clothing. The collection is inspired by African history but features a modern angle of African fashion for both men and women. The ladies tees and tanks were definitely Style Stamped while putting us in the mind of Spring and Summer! The African prints and cloth noted throughout the collection brought all of the items to life.
IQTEST
The next designer showcased a very unique collection, all created from one-of-a-kind garments using salvaged fabric scraps and remnants that mass-producing designers usually throw away. Melissa Lockwood showcased amazing pieces from her IQTEST label. If we can wear clothes from a collection like this, sign us up to go green!
ZAFF™
Ethiopian born designer Abai Schulze presented her collection of beautiful hand-crafted leather handbags and accessories all produced by artisans in Ethiopia. Bringing together her life’s influences with her art, ZAFF’s creator showcased classic designs of leather goods marked with signs of her culture. Many of the items are unisex, all are functional and fashionable! Deborah Mdurvwa, a Style Stamped fashion friend, partnered with ZAFF for this feature to showcase her awesome leather jewelry line from her Mdurvwa collection.
Mdurvwa
We were so happy to see Deborah Mdurvwa showcase her newest collection. We have seen her awesome leather accessories collections and it was a treat to see her newest contemporary collection featured. Hailing from a Nigerian background, Mdurvwa showcased unique pieces that included cage leather, shimmery print, a little sheer and a lot of sexy.
Kim Ellen
There is nothing like a classy, long, big beautiful dress! Kim Ellen clearly knows that as she wowed us with her custom-made special occasion dresses during this show. All we could say was….yessss yellow dress! Kim is also a lawyer, making her presence even more fitting for the event.
EPISON
The finale was headlined by founder and designer of EPISON, Deidre Jefferies. Deidre describes her aesthetic as the “future of classic clothing.” We couldn’t agree more! EPISON has afforded Deidre many awards and accolades, including being named “Top 12 Designers of 2012 to Watch” by Ebony Magazine. Her designs have been featured in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and after seeing this show, we can see why! The designs are very well crafted and designed clothing for a sophisticated and fun woman. We loved the use of bright colors and prints!
