AfroPunk Festival is a two day music festival that began in New York City in 2005 which has now expanded to Atlanta and Paris as of 2015. Incepted to provide persons of color who are into punk rock, hardcore, and alternative music scenes a place to connect in the community, AfroPunk is actually a place of inclusion for anyone who loves music and a great time. When I walked through the gates for the first time this year it was almost like stepping out of normal everyday society into a sub-culture of art, music, and do whatever you feel like it fashion. What topped it off was the atmosphere; everyone had a smile on their face and you could sense the inclusion in the air. Plus the festival came with rules and it wasn’t hard to tell that everyone was adhering to them, whether they’d actually read them or not. That was probably the dopest part of the weekend.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were signs to remind the ignorant people in the world how to operate in everyday life….remind them that it’s not all about them and their narcissistic thoughts and ways, that people have the right to be who they want to be which doesn’t take away from who they’ve chosen to be…we are all individuals who should have the right to live individual lives and not conform to one mainstream way of thinking, doing, dressing, living, loving, etc….Imagine a world where everyone loved the skin they were in and respected for living the life they were born into or chose. AfroPunk was a peek into a world like that and I loved every minute of it, and the fashion was the icing on the cake. AfroPunk is Style Stamped!
Love. Music. People. The vibe was awesome. I came with friends, saw old friends, and met new friends. My youngest sister traveled from Charlotte, NC to be there and I met people who came from as far as L.A. just to party and hang and it was well worth it! I saw some of my favorite music acts including my faves – Janelle Monáe and CeeLo Green. ♥ Love.
AfroPunk was a great end to an awesome summer. I have one more music festival this year and then it’s over…until next summer!
